Previously: When a rain-soaked teenager confronted wealthy boutique owner Eleanor with an old photograph, a long-buried family secret threatened to shatter her carefully constructed life.

Unravelling the Lie

The shock of seeing the photograph sent a physical jolt through Eleanor’s body. She reached out, her fingers brushing against the cold, wet paper. It was real. That photograph had been taken in a private clinic nineteen years ago—a night she had spent the last two decades trying to forget because of the immense grief attached to it.

"Lucas?" Eleanor whispered, the name slipping from her lips like a prayer. "Is your name Lucas?"

The boy nodded slowly, his aggressive stance collapsing into that of a heartbroken child. Sensing the danger of standing in the open storm, Eleanor grabbed his arm and pulled him into the dry warmth of the SUV, slamming the door behind him. The luxury cabin was suddenly filled with the scent of wet asphalt and heavy, emotional tension.

"You don't understand," Eleanor said, tears finally spilling over her own eyelashes. "I didn't abandon you. They told me you died, Lucas. The doctor told me my baby didn't survive the delivery."

Lucas stared at her, his jaw dropping.

"No... that’s impossible. Clara, the woman who raised me, she told me you gave me away because I was an inconvenience to your career. She had this photo to prove you were my mother."

The mention of Clara made Eleanor’s blood run cold. Clara had been the personal secretary of Arthur Vance—Eleanor's powerful, controlling ex-husband. Arthur had desperately wanted an heir, but when Eleanor tried to leave his abusive grasp during her pregnancy, he had threatened to ruin her. She had fled to a private clinic, but Arthur’s reach had been far greater than she ever imagined.

Before Eleanor could explain further, her phone vibrated in her hand. It was an unknown number. She unlocked the screen and gasped. It was a live photo of her SUV, taken from a dark sedan parked across the street. Beneath the image was a chilling text: "Keep your mouth shut, Eleanor. If he learns the truth about me, neither of you will survive the night."

If he learns the truth about me, neither of you will survive the night."
