Louise stood by the refrigerator, panting, her face flushed with a mixture of embarrassment and lingering anger. She smoothed down her cardigan, trying to regain her composure.

"Matt, thank goodness you're home," she stammered, her voice suddenly shifting to a victimized tone. "You don't understand. She’s been hysterical. She fell in the bathroom and bruised her eye, and now she’s blaming me! I was only trying to calm her down!"

Matt ignored his mother's desperate pleas. He gently cupped Taylor’s face, his thumb lightly brushing her cheek, avoiding the painful bruise.

"Taylor, sweetheart, look at me," Matt whispered, his voice cracking. "Tell me what happened. Please."

Taylor looked at Matt, her eyes filled with a lifetime of fear. She clutched his uniform, her knuckles turning white.

"She’s lying, Matt," Taylor sobbed, her voice barely a whisper. "She’s been taking your deployment money. I found the bank statements. When I confronted her, she... she locked me in the house and took my phone. She did this to my eye when I tried to run away to the neighbor's house."

The words hung in the air like a heavy fog. Matt slowly stood up, turning to face the woman who had raised him. Louise’s face drained of color. For months, Matt had been sending his military paychecks to a joint account, trusting his mother to help Taylor manage the mortgage and medical bills while he was overseas. He pulled out his own phone, logging into the banking app. The balance was nearly zero. Tens of thousands of dollars had been transferred to an offshore account registered in Louise's name.

Louise scoffed, crossing her arms defensively.

"I brought you into this world, Matt! You owe me everything! That girl is nothing but a gold-digger who wanted to steal you away from me!"
