Previously: Returning early from deployment, Marcus expects a joyous reunion. Instead, he finds his wife in his best friend's arms, only to uncover a devastating secret.

The Breaking Point

The duffle bag slipped from Marcus’s hand, hitting the hardwood floor with a dull, heavy thud. The sound seemed to break the temporary paralysis holding them all captive. Marcus took a step back, his eyes flashing with a dangerous mix of sorrow and mounting fury. He felt like a stranger in his own home, watching a nightmare unfold in real-time.

"How long has this been going on?" Marcus demanded, his voice cracking under the weight of his heartbreak. "While I was overseas, sleeping in the dirt, you two were here, doing this?"

Sarah shook her head frantically, tears spilling over her pale cheeks. "No, Marcus, please! It’s not what it looks like. We aren't... we would never do that to you!" she cried, her hands reaching out to him, though she didn't dare cross the distance between them. David stepped in front of her protectively, which only fueled Marcus’s anger.

"Get out of my way, David," Marcus growled, his fists clenching. "I trusted you. You were supposed to look after her, not take my place."

Marcus turned on his heel, unable to bear the sight of them for another second. He grabbed his bag, ready to walk out into the cold night and never look back. But as he reached for the doorknob, a sharp gasp echoed behind him, followed by the sound of a heavy fall. He spun around to see Sarah collapsed on the floor, unconscious, her face dangerously white.

David knelt beside her instantly, cradling her head. He looked up at Marcus, his eyes blazing with a mixture of anger and desperate sorrow. "She's sick, Marcus!" David shouted, his voice echoing off the walls. "She has stage-three lymphoma! She's been undergoing chemotherapy for three months!"

The words struck Marcus like a physical blow. He froze, the room spinning around him as the devastating reality began to sink in.
