For a few agonizing seconds, the only sound in the house was Irene's soft whimpering and the settling of drywall dust. Samantha slowly sat up among the debris, her face pale with shock and covered in plaster. She stared at her husband in uniform, her eyes wide with a mixture of fear and sudden, venomous rage. She spat out a piece of debris and pointed a trembling finger at him.

"You threw me through a wall! You're crazy, William! I'll call the police on you!" Samantha shrieked, struggling to stand up.

William didn't back down. He gently placed his hand on his mother's trembling shoulder, brushing the cold rice from her hair. "Call them," he said, his voice deadly calm. "Call them so I can show them what you just did to an elderly woman. Call them so they can see the bruises on her wrists."

It was only then that William noticed the faint, purple marks on Irene's frail arms. When he questioned his mother, Irene broke down completely, revealing a horrifying truth that had been hidden for months. While William was deployed, Samantha had systematically cut Irene off from her friends, confiscated her phone, and kept her a virtual prisoner in her own home.

"She wanted the deed to the house, William," Irene sobbed, her voice cracking. "She kept telling me that if I didn't sign the property over to her, she would put me in a state home and make sure you never saw me again."

Samantha had been secretly draining Irene’s savings account, using William’s absence to manipulate and terrorize the elderly woman. Samantha sneered from the doorway, realizing her leverage was gone but still refusing to back down. She claimed that the house legally belonged to them anyway and that she had every right to manage the family assets. But William knew he had to protect his mother, no matter the cost to his marriage.
