Previously: When soldier Andrew returned from his deployment early, he expected a joyful reunion with his wife, Ashley. Instead, he walked into a heartbreaking betrayal that changed his life forever.

A Web of Deceit

For several agonizing seconds, the only sound in the room was the soft humming of the refrigerator from the open kitchen. Andrew dropped his duffle bag. The heavy thud echoed like a gunshot. He looked at Robert, who stood up slowly, looking down at the floor, unable to meet the eyes of the man who had trusted him with his life.

"How could you?" Andrew’s voice cracked, thick with unshed tears. "My wife. My best friend. While I was thousands of miles away risking my life?"

Ashley took a step forward, her hands shaking as she reached out toward him. "Please, Andrew, you have to listen to me. It’s not what you think. I wanted to tell you, but I couldn't risk your safety out there." She wiped a tear from her cheek, her voice dropping to a whisper. "I'm sick, Andrew. I was diagnosed with stage three lymphoma four months ago."

Andrew blinked, the anger in his chest momentarily clashing with a wave of sheer terror. "What?" he breathed.

Ashley pulled back her hair, showing him the thin, patchy spots near her scalp. She explained that she had been undergoing aggressive chemotherapy in secret, begging the military liaison not to inform him so he wouldn't lose focus in a dangerous combat zone. Robert, she claimed, was only there as a caretaker—driving her to appointments and holding her hand through the agonizing side effects of the treatment.

For a moment, Andrew felt a rush of overwhelming guilt and relief. But as he stepped closer to comfort his wife, his eyes fell upon the coffee table. Sitting next to a stack of medical papers was a small, white plastic stick with two distinct pink lines.

A positive pregnancy test.

Andrew’s heart turned to lead. He hadn't touched his wife in nine months. He looked at the test, then at Robert’s pale face, and realized the ultimate deception had just begun.
