The Soldier Presumed Dead for Three Years Arrives With His Loyal Dog

A Voice from the Past

Clara’s heart stopped. She stared at the silver band, her fingers trembling as she picked it up. Engraved on the inside was a date—their wedding date—and the words "Always and Forever." She looked up at the scarred, weathered face of the patient. The beard was thick and flecked with gray, and there was a deep scar running along his jawline, but there was no mistaking him.

"Caleb..."

she whispered, the name catching in her throat.

Three years ago, Captain Caleb Thorne had been declared missing in action, presumed dead after a covert extraction mission went horribly wrong. Clara had spent years grieving, trying to piece her life back together. Yet, here he was, breathing, bleeding, and brought to her very hospital by a dog she had never seen before.

Before she could process the shock, Dr. Vance, the chief of surgery, stormed into the room. He took one look at the German Shepherd and frowned.

"What is an animal doing in a sterile trauma unit? Get this dog out of here immediately!"

Dr. Vance ordered, gesturing to the security guards waiting in the hallway.

As the guards stepped forward, the German Shepherd placed himself between them and the bed, letting out a low, guttural growl. The tension in the room skyrocketed. Clara knew that if the dog lashed out, he would be put down, and Caleb’s only protector would be lost.

"No, wait!"

Clara yelled, stepping in front of the dog. "He stays. He is a military K9, and he is the only reason this man is alive. Look at his vest."

Clara reached down slowly, showing her hands to the dog, who sniffed her fingers and immediately calmed down, as if recognizing her scent from Caleb. On the side of the tactical vest was a small, waterproof pouch. Clara unzipped it and pulled out a heavily encrypted military drive and a handwritten note. The note was in Caleb’s handwriting, addressed directly to her.
