Ruth stumbled backward against the kitchen table, her face twisting from shock into a mask of indignant fury. She smoothed down her housecoat, trying to regain her composure as her son held his weeping wife.

"Ryan! Thank God you're home," Ruth lied smoothly, her voice suddenly shifting to a tone of maternal concern. "You don't understand. She's lost her mind. She fell earlier—that's how she got that bruise—and she’s been screaming at me! I was only trying to defend myself!"

Ryan slowly stood up, keeping Chloe behind him. His eyes, cold and demanding, darted from his mother's defensive posture to the heavy frying pan on the floor, and finally to the dark bruise on Chloe's cheek. He knew his wife. He knew her gentle nature, and he knew the deep, manipulative streak his mother had hidden for years.

"Don't lie to me, Mom," Ryan said, his voice dangerously low. "I saw what you were doing. I heard what you said."

Chloe, clutching Ryan's uniform jacket, finally found her voice through her tears. She revealed the nightmare she had been living since Ryan’s deployment six months ago. Ruth had moved in under the guise of helping with the pregnancy, but instead, she had turned the home into a prison. Ruth had taken Chloe's phone, intercepted Ryan's letters, and constantly accused Chloe of using the pregnancy to "trap" her son and steal his military benefits. The abuse had escalated from verbal insults to physical intimidation, culminating in the bruise on Chloe's cheek when Ruth shoved her against a doorframe the previous night.

"She told me if I ever complained to you, she’d make sure you never saw your baby," Chloe sobbed, her body shaking. "I was so scared, Ryan."
