Chloe lay whimpering on the floor, clutching her ribs, while Beatrice leaped up from the flowered sofa, her face pale with terror. "Tyler! Are you insane? She’s family!" Beatrice shrieked, rushing to her daughter's side. Tyler ignored them entirely, his heart breaking as he knelt beside Margaret. He gently lifted her from the cold floor, wrapping his strong arms around her fragile, shivering frame.
"I've got you, Grandma. You're safe now," Tyler whispered, his voice cracking with emotion.
Margaret clung to his uniform, sobbing quietly. "I'm so sorry, Tyler. I didn't want you to worry while you were fighting for our country," she whimpered. Tyler looked around the room, noticing for the first time the bruises on his grandmother's wrists and the hollow look in her eyes. She had been starved and mistreated for months.
Chloe struggled to her feet, her face contorted with anger. "You can't just barge in here and assault me! This is my house now! Your brother signed it over to me before he left, and we are just disciplining this crazy old woman who refuses to keep her hands clean!" she lied, her voice dripping with venom.
Tyler stood up, towering over the two women. His face was a mask of cold fury. "You think I don't know the truth?" Tyler said, his voice dangerously quiet. "Before I deployed, Grandma and I set up a co-ownership deed. My brother never owned this house, and neither do you. I have the power of attorney, and I've been monitoring the bank accounts. I saw the unauthorized transfers, Chloe. I came home early because I knew something was wrong—but I never imagined you could be this evil."
