Connor didn't knock. He slid the heavy glass door open with a sharp, metallic screech that shattered the peaceful silence of the living room. Sarah gasped, her wine glass slipping from her fingers and shattering on the hardwood floor. David bolted upright, his eyes widening in sheer terror as he looked at the man he thought had perished in a desert half a world away.

"Connor?" Sarah breathed, her face turning as white as the snow outside. "But... they told me you were gone. We had a funeral."

Connor didn't answer her. He kept his eyes locked on David, who was already stepping back. Connor gently set Ethan down on the rug, wrapping him in a wool throw blanket from the armchair.

"Why was my son outside in the freezing cold in his pajamas?" Connor demanded, his voice a low, dangerous rumble that shook the room.

David tried to find his voice, puffing out his chest in a desperate bid for authority.

"He was throwing a tantrum, Connor. It was just a time-out to teach him a lesson. We only put him out there five minutes ago!"

Ethan whimpered from beneath the blanket, whispering,

"It was longer, Daddy. It was so long."

The word 'Daddy' pierced Connor’s heart, but it also confirmed his worst fears. David had taken his place, but instead of protecting his family, he was abusing his power. Connor stepped closer, the sheer physical presence of a battle-hardened soldier causing David to stumble backward. Sarah looked between them, horror dawning on her face.

"David, you told me Ethan went to bed early!" she cried, realizing the depth of her new husband's cruelty. "You locked him out there?"
