Both Sarah and David were arrested on charges of child endangerment and neglect.

The legal battle that followed was grueling, but Marcus refused to back down. With the evidence of the lock, Toby's statement, and Marcus's timely rescue, the court suspended Sarah's custody rights. Marcus was granted full temporary custody, which was later made permanent. He chose to leave the active-duty military to take a stable desk job close to home, ensuring he would never have to leave his son's side again.

Months later, sitting by a warm fireplace in their new apartment, Toby looked up from his coloring book and smiled at Marcus.
