The silence was broken only by the sound of Stephanie’s ragged breathing. Brian slowly stood up from the couch, keeping his hands raised in a placating gesture that only fueled Zachary's rising anger. The man who had been like a brother to Zachary since high school couldn't even look him in the eye.

"Man, it’s not what it looks like. We were just... she was lonely, Zach. I was just keeping her company," Brian stammered, his voice hollow.

Zachary’s gaze shifted to the coffee table, where two half-empty wine glasses sat next to a glowing laptop screen. On the screen was an open tab showing an airline booking. Zachary walked past his sobbing wife, his boots heavy on the floor, and stared at the monitor. It was a confirmation page for a one-way trip to Hawaii, booked for the following week. The names on the tickets were Stephanie and Brian.

A cold wave of realization washed over Zachary. This wasn't a momentary lapse in judgment; it was a planned escape. He turned to Stephanie, his voice a low, dangerous whisper.

"A vacation? While I was risking my life, you two were planning a getaway?" Zachary asked, the pain in his voice cutting through the room.

Stephanie fell to her knees, grasping at his cargo pants. "No, Zachary, please! It was a mistake. I was going to cancel it, I swear! I got scared. I didn't know how to handle you being gone!" she wailed, tears streaming down her face.

Before Zachary could reply, his phone vibrated in his pocket. He pulled it out, expecting a routine notification, but instead found a message from Brian's wife, Clara. The message contained a screenshot of a bank transfer. Stephanie had drained Zachary’s joint combat savings account—over fifty thousand dollars—and transferred it directly into a joint account with Brian. The betrayal was complete; they hadn't just stolen his marriage, they had stolen his entire future.
