Previously: When Captain Marcus Vance returns from deployment, he expects a happy family reunion. Instead, he finds his sister Clara being tortured by their greedy stepmother while her husband watches.

Secrets in the Dust

As Eleanor whimpered on the floor and Julian cowered in the corner, Marcus demanded answers. He stood tall in his dusty camo gear, a stark contrast to the opulent, corrupt world of the Vance estate.

"Why are you doing this to her? She is your family!"

Marcus demanded, his voice a low, dangerous rumble.

"Family?"

Eleanor spat, nursing her bruised neck as she struggled to her feet. "She is a parasite! Your father left everything to Clara, believing you were dead in that desert. This estate, the family fortune—it all belongs to us!"

Julian finally found his voice, though it trembled violently. "She refused to sign the transfer papers, Marcus. We had to make her understand. You were supposed to be gone forever. Your return changes nothing. The lawyers have already processed the declaration of your death!"

Marcus felt a cold chill run down his spine. The betrayal was absolute. His own stepmother and Clara's greedy husband had conspired to declare him dead while systematically torturing his sister to sign away her birthright. Clara had stayed strong, enduring weeks of isolation and abuse, holding onto the faint hope that her brother would return.

"You thought a piece of paper could protect you from me?" Marcus stepped closer to Julian, who practically melted into the marble wall. "I survived enemy lines, Julian. A corrupt lawyer is nothing to me."

Clara pulled on Marcus's sleeve, her voice weak but urgent. "Marcus, they have the original will. They hid it in the study vault. If they destroy it, we lose everything."

Eleanor let out a cold, chilling laugh. "You're too late, boy. The vault requires a biometric lock, and only I can open it. If you touch me again, that will burns."
