A Soldier Returns Home Early to Find His Wife Holding Another Man's Hand
Previously: Luke thought his homecoming would be the happiest day of his life. Instead, opening his own front door shattered his world in an instant.
The Unspoken Betrayal
For a long, agonizing minute, nobody moved. The silence in the living room was suffocating. Luke finally found his voice, though it sounded like a raspy whisper. "How long?" he asked, looking from Jessica to Matthew.
Matthew took a step forward, his hands raised defensively. "Luke, man, itβs not what it looks like. Please, let us tell you what happened."
"I asked you a question, Matthew!" Luke roared, the pain finally bursting through his shock. "How long have you been sleeping with my wife while I was putting my life on the line?"
Jessica began to sob, her shoulders shaking violently. "No, Luke, never! We haven't... we aren't doing that!" she cried, rushing toward him. But Luke took a step back, his hand raised to keep her away. The distance between them felt like an ocean.
"Then why were you holding hands like that? Why were you sitting so close?" Luke demanded, his voice cracking with emotion. "I write to you every single week, Jess. I called you whenever I could. And you... you're here with him."
Matthew sighed, looking down at the floor before meeting Luke's tear-filled gaze. "Luke, Jessica has been keeping a secret from you because she didn't want you to lose focus during your deployment. She was diagnosed with a severe neurological condition six months ago."
Luke froze, his anger momentarily stalled by a wave of cold dread. "What?"
Jessica wiped her tears, her voice barely a whisper. "The doctors found a tumor, Luke. It's benign, but I needed intensive therapy and daily help. I couldn't drive. I couldn't even cook for myself some days. I didn't want to tell you and make you panic over there. Matthew... Matthew was the only one who knew. He's been driving me to my appointments, making sure I eat, holding me when I was too scared to sleep."
