The Poison in the House

Lucas immediately dropped to his knees, pulling his shaking grandmother into his arms. Evelyn’s lavender blouse was torn, and her face was pale with fright, but she clung to his digital camo fatigues as if he were a lifeline. "I've got you, Nana. You're safe now," Lucas whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. Behind them, amidst the ruined wooden spindles of the staircase, Tiffany began to stir. Coughing through the dust, she glared at Lucas with eyes cold as ice, showing no remorse for her actions.

Instead of apologizing, Tiffany spat blood onto the marble floor and laughed bitterly. "You think you're a hero, Lucas?" she sneered, rising slowly from the wreckage. "Your precious grandmother has been hiding the truth from you. This house, the family trust—it was all supposed to be signed over to me. She promised!" Evelyn shook her head vigorously, tears streaming down her wrinkled cheeks. She explained that Tiffany had forced her into isolation, cutting off her phone lines and intercepting Lucas's letters while trying to force her to sign a power of attorney document.

"She wanted to sell everything and put me in a home, Lucas,"

Evelyn whimpered. "She told me you died overseas so I would lose hope." Hearing those words, Lucas felt a chill run down his spine. The woman he intended to marry had systematically tortured his grandmother, lied about his death, and tried to steal his family's legacy. Tiffany had assumed Lucas would never find out, believing his deployment had been extended. She had underestimated the bond between a soldier and the woman who raised him, and now, her web of lies was completely unravelling.
