James's heart hammered against his ribs as he stood on the familiar gravel driveway of his suburban home. For nine long, grueling months, the heavy weight of his military gear and the dust of distant battlefields had been his only constant companions. Through every sleepless night, the memory of his wife, Rachel, had been his north star. He had deliberately chosen not to call her from the airport, wanting nothing more than to see her eyes light up with pure, unadulterated joy when he walked through the door.

With his heavy canvas duffel bag slung over his shoulder, James quietly inserted his key into the lock. The brass turned with a familiar click. He pushed the door open, ready to call out her name, but the words died in his throat.

The warm, sunlit living room was exactly as he had left it, yet entirely foreign. Sitting intimately on the soft pink fabric of the sofa was Rachel. Her hand was clasped tightly in the hand of another man—a man James had never seen before, wearing a checkered button-up shirt. Their bodies were angled toward each other, their faces inches apart in what looked like a deeply private, tender moment.

At the sound of the door opening, both of them jumped. Rachel’s eyes widened in sheer terror as they locked onto James's camouflage uniform. She scrambled to her feet, her face flushing a pale, ghostly white.

"James! Oh my god, James... I can explain," she gasped, her voice trembling violently.

James stood frozen by the entryway. The duffel bag slipped from his fingers, hitting the hardwood floor with a dull thud. The world around him seemed to lose its color. Tears welled in his eyes, blurring the image of the woman he adored standing next to a stranger. The betrayal pierced deeper than any battlefield wound he had ever endured.
