Unearthing the Deceit

Jessica lay on the floor amidst the plaster dust, clutching her shoulder and glaring up at her husband with a mixture of fear and rage. "Are you insane, David?" she shrieked, wiping the dust from her face. "You put your hands on me for that useless old woman?"

But David wasn't listening. He was already on his knees beside Martha, gently brushing the rice from her silver hair and wiping the tears from her face. "I'm so sorry, Grandma," he whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. "I'm here now. She will never hurt you again." Martha clung to his uniform, trembling like a leaf, whispering that she had been so afraid to tell him what was happening while he was away.

David stood up, turning a cold, military-grade gaze onto his wife. He demanded to know why Jessica was treating the woman who owned the house like an unwanted intruder. Jessica sneered, claiming that Martha was losing her mind and was a burden. But David knew his grandmother was sharp as a tack. Something else was going on.

As Jessica stormed out of the kitchen to nurse her bruised ego, David noticed a stack of unopened mail stuffed behind the microwave. He pulled it out and began flipping through the envelopes. His heart sank. There were foreclosure warnings, past-due utility bills, and bank statements showing that Martha's savings account had been completely drained.

"What is this, Jessica?" David demanded, marching into the living room where his wife was packing a bag.

Jessica went pale, her arrogant demeanor suddenly vanishing. She tried to snatch the papers, but David held them out of reach. The truth was unraveling fast. While David was overseas sending money back to help maintain the house, Jessica had been forging Martha's signature, slowly stealing the elderly woman's life savings and putting the historic family home at risk of foreclosure.
