Previously: When Sergeant Leo Miller returned home early from deployment, he expected a joyous family reunion. Instead, he walked into a nightmare that shattered his heart and sparked his fury.

The Dark Secret Revealed

Chloe scrambled up from the floor, clutching her side and screaming in outrage. Beatrice leaped from the couch, her face pale with a mix of anger and fear. "How dare you lay a hand on my daughter!" Beatrice shrieked, rushing to Chloe's side. "She is the owner of this house now, and we can treat this useless old woman however we please!"

Leo helped his grandmother to her feet, gently wiping the dirty water from her face. Margaret was weeping, her voice barely a whisper. "I'm sorry, Leo. I didn't want you to worry while you were deployed," she sobbed.

"What do you mean, she owns this house?" Leo demanded, his voice dangerously low. This home had belonged to Margaret and his late grandfather for forty years. It was supposed to be a safe haven.

Chloe spat on the floor, her eyes gleaming with malice. "Your precious grandmother signed the deed over to us last month," she sneered. "She couldn't afford the taxes, so we took pity on her. But if she wants to live under our roof, she has to earn her keep. She's nothing but a servant now."

"That's a lie!" Margaret cried out, her frail frame shaking. "They told me I was signing a medical authorization form! I can't read the small print anymore, Leo. They tricked me!"

Leo felt a sickening wave of betrayal. While he was risking his life overseas, his own aunt and cousin had preyed upon his vulnerable grandmother, stealing her home and reducing her to a victim of physical and emotional abuse. He pulled out his phone, his fingers dialing a number he knew by heart. It was his childhood friend, Marcus, who was now a prominent local attorney.

"Marcus, I need you at my grandmother's house immediately," Leo said into the receiver, keeping his eyes locked on the two women. "We have a case of elder abuse, fraud, and theft. And they are going to pay for every single second of it."
