A Soldier Returns Home to Save His Pregnant Sister from Their Mother's Wrath
Previously: When Army soldier John made a surprise visit home, he never expected to find his pregnant sister Sarah in absolute terror—and his own mother holding a weapon.
Unearthing the Bitter Truth
As John held his shaking sister, his mind raced. Sarah was clutching his uniform as if he were her only lifeline in a raging storm. Martha stood leaning against the counter, her shock quickly morphing back into a defensive, bitter scowl. She straightened her faded cardigan, trying to regain her composure, though her eyes locked onto John with a mixture of anger and panic.
"John, you don't understand," Martha stammered, her voice suddenly trembling. "You shouldn't be here. This is family business. She brought this upon herself!"
John stood up slowly, keeping Sarah behind him. He looked at the deep bruise under his sister's eye, his heart aching with a mixture of sorrow and fury. He had faced hostile forces overseas, but he never expected the most dangerous enemy to be the woman who raised him.
"Family business?" John spat, his voice low and dangerous. "You just tried to hit a pregnant woman with a cast-iron skillet, Mom! What is wrong with you? Why is Sarah bruised?"
Sarah pulled on John's sleeve, her voice barely a whisper. "John, she... she’s been keeping me locked in the house. She won't let me see anyone. She won't even let me go to my prenatal doctor appointments."
John stared at his mother, horrified. "Why, Mom? Why would you do that?"
The truth that spilled out of Martha’s mouth was colder than John could have ever imagined. Martha wasn't ashamed of the pregnancy itself; she was terrified of who the father was. Sarah had fallen in love with David, the son of the town's prominent mayor—a man who had recently initiated a foreclosure on Martha’s property due to her unpaid debts. Martha had been holding Sarah hostage, planning to use the unborn baby as leverage to blackmail the mayor into wiping her debts clean. When Sarah refused to participate in the scheme and tried to escape to tell David the truth, Martha had snapped, striking her and locking her in the kitchen.
"I did it for this family!" Martha shrieked, showing no remorse. "Without that leverage, we lose this house! She owes me!"
