Holding his trembling wife, Tyler could feel the frantic beating of her heart. Megan clung to his uniform, her tears soaking his collar. Frances stood across the cluttered kitchen, panting, her hands shaking as she tried to smooth down her flannel shirt. She attempted to mask her malice with a look of maternal concern, but the mask was slipping.

"Tyler, thank God you're home," Frances stammered, her voice trembling. "She’s hysterical. She’s been lying to you, trying to turn you against me. I was just trying to teach her some respect!"

Tyler stood up slowly, keeping one protective hand on Megan’s shoulder. His gaze locked onto his mother, his eyes cold and demanding. He pointed directly at the dark bruise on Megan's face.

"You did that to her," Tyler said, his voice dangerously low. "My wife is pregnant with my child, and you laid your hands on her. Explain that, Mother."

Frances scoffed, waving her hand dismissively. She claimed Megan had fallen, but Megan finally found her voice. Spurred by her husband's presence, the young woman stood up, trembling but resolute.

"She's lying, Tyler," Megan sobbed, her voice gaining strength. "She’s been doing this for months. Every time you called, she stood over me, making sure I didn't say a word. She threatened to tell you I was cheating on you while you were deployed if I ever complained. She wanted to destroy us so you would stay with her forever."

The revelation hit Tyler like a physical blow. The mother he had loved and respected had spent his entire deployment terrorizing his wife out of a sick, obsessive jealousy. Frances didn't want to share her son, and she was willing to destroy his new family to keep him to herself.
