A Web of Toxic Lies
Clara collapsed onto the kitchen floor, sobbing uncontrollably as she clutched her pregnant belly. Mark immediately dropped to his knees beside her, checking her face and stomach for injuries. "Clara, look at me. Are you okay? Is the baby okay?" he pleaded, his voice cracking with a mixture of terror and fury.
Clara could only nod through her tears, her hands shaking violently. Meanwhile, Beatrice groaned on the floor, nursing a bruised shoulder where she had shattered the cabinet. She looked up at her son, her eyes wide with a mixture of shock and self-righteous anger.
"How dare you put your hands on me, Mark!" Beatrice hissed, spitting a strand of hair from her face. "I am your mother! I did this for you!"
Mark stood up, shielding Clara behind his body. He glared at his mother with a coldness he usually reserved for the battlefield. "You just tried to kill my wife and my unborn child, Mom! Are you insane? Why did you attack her?"
Beatrice scrambled to her feet, pointing a trembling, accusatory finger at Clara. She reached into her floral blouse and pulled out a crumpled piece of paper, throwing it onto the kitchen island.
"Because she is a traitor!" Beatrice screamed. "While you were risking your life overseas, she was cheating on you! That baby she's carrying isn't yours, Mark. I found the medical records in her desk. It lists a fertility clinic and a donor! She played you for a fool!"
The kitchen fell dead silent, save for Clara’s soft whimpering. Beatrice stood tall, convinced she had saved her son from a lifetime of deception. She expected Mark to turn on Clara, to throw her out of the house. Instead, she watched as Mark’s face drained of color, not with betrayal toward his wife, but with absolute disgust toward his mother.
