Previously: When Luke returned from his deployment early, he never expected to find his pregnant wife Grace cowering in the kitchen, facing the wrath of his own mother, Beatrice.

The Bitter Truth Unveiled

Holding his trembling wife, Luke felt a cold dread settle in his chest. He gently touched the dark bruise on Grace's cheek, his heart breaking. "Who did this to you?" he whispered, though he already knew the answer. Grace could only sob against his chest, clutching his uniform as if he were her only lifeline in a stormy sea.

Beatrice immediately tried to regain control of the situation, her voice shifting from aggressive to victimized in an instant. "Luke, thank God you're home! You have no idea what she’s been doing. She’s been lying to you, spending your deployment money, and neglecting the house! I had to discipline her. She tripped and hit her face, Luke. She’s trying to frame me!"

"That is a lie!" Grace choked out, finding her voice. "Luke, she took everything. I couldn't even buy groceries."

Luke stood up, his posture rigid. During his months overseas, he had noticed strange transactions on his bank account, but when he had called Beatrice—who had power of attorney to help Grace with the bills—his mother had claimed Grace was simply irresponsible. Now, looking at the cluttered, neglected kitchen and his malnourished, bruised wife, the pieces of the puzzle violently clicked into place.

Luke pulled out his phone, opening his banking app. "I checked the accounts before I boarded my flight, Mom," he said, his voice deadly quiet. "Over ten thousand dollars was transferred directly to your personal savings. And Grace hasn't been able to afford prenatal vitamins. Is this where my hard-earned combat pay went?"

Beatrice’s face paled, the maternal facade crumbling to reveal the greedy, manipulative woman beneath. She realized her lies could no longer shield her from the truth.
