Previously: When Sergeant Maxwell returned from deployment, he never expected to catch his fiancée abusing his helpless grandmother. The truth behind the cruelty was far worse than he imagined.

The Web of Deceit Unravels

Ignoring Cynthia’s frantic whimpers, Maxwell knelt beside his grandmother. Esther was trembling, her pale face bruised and wet with tears. Gently, with the tenderness of a man who had seen too much suffering, he lifted her back into her wheelchair, checking her for broken bones.

"I’m here, Nana. You’re safe now. I’ve got you," Maxwell whispered, his voice cracking with emotion.

Cynthia slowly scrambled to her feet, dusting off her designer dark green dress. Her terrified expression quickly shifted into a calculated mask of defense. She realized she had been caught red-handed, but she was determined to lie her way out of it.

"Maxwell, sweetheart, it’s not what it looks like!" Cynthia stammered, stepping backward as Maxwell stood up to face her. "She was being difficult! She refused to take her medication, and she fell! I was just trying to help her up!"

Esther shook her head weakly, clutching Maxwell’s hand. "She’s lying, Max. She’s been doing this for months. She wants me gone."

The weight of his grandmother's words hit Maxwell like a physical blow. He looked at the woman he had promised to marry, suddenly seeing her for the stranger she truly was. Cynthia had volunteered to move into the estate to care for Esther during his deployment. It was supposed to be an act of love. Instead, it was a hostile takeover.

Maxwell pulled out his phone, his thumb hovering over the security app. Before leaving, he had installed a discreet nanny cam in the courtyard to keep an eye on his grandmother's safety. He had never checked it, trusting Cynthia completely. Now, he opened the live archive. His heart sank as he scrolled through weeks of footage. The camera had captured everything: Cynthia denying Esther food, screaming at her, and forcing her to sign documents. Cynthia was trying to force the elderly woman into signing over the deed of the multi-million dollar Georgian estate.
