Sergeant David Miller had spent the last twelve months serving his country overseas, dreaming of the day he would finally return to his quiet suburban hometown. Most of all, he dreamed of seeing his younger sister, Chloe. Six months ago, a devastating car accident had left Chloe paralyzed from the waist down, turning her once-vibrant life upside down. Stepping off the bus in his crisp, dark blue military dress uniform, David decided to skip calling ahead. He wanted to surprise her, to see the joy on her face when he walked through the door. Carrying his duffel bag, he walked up the sunny driveway of their family home. The neighborhood was peaceful, but as he neared the backyard patio, a sharp, angry voice shattered the afternoon quiet. With a roar of fury, David kicked the gate open. Before Amanda could react, he sprinted across the lawn and shoved the cruel caregiver away, sending her stumbling onto the grass.
