Vanessa groaned, clutching her shoulder as she stood up from the cracked drywall. The shock on her face quickly twisted into a defensive sneer when she saw Joshua holding his mother. "Joshua! You're home!" she stammered, trying to smooth down her cherry-red dress. "You don't understand. Your mother has gone completely senile! She's been stealing from us. She was trying to hide money in that dusty old bowl!"

Joshua stood up slowly, shielding Martha. His eyes were cold, hard steel. "My mother has lived in this house since my father built it with his own hands. You told me she was happy here while I was deployed. What is going on, Vanessa?"

Martha reached out, her frail fingers clutching Joshua's uniform trousers. "She wanted the papers, Joshua," the elderly woman whimpered, holding the wooden bowl tightly. "She wanted me to sign them. When I refused, she said she would put me in a home and let me rot."

Joshua’s gaze locked onto his wife. "What papers?" he demanded.

Vanessa took a step back, her face turning pale. "It’s nothing! Just paperwork to manage the estate. She’s too old to handle her own affairs, Joshua. I was just trying to help us!"

But Joshua knew his wife’s tone. He reached into the wooden bowl his mother held out to him. Inside, hidden beneath a false bottom that only those who knew his father's craftsmanship would recognize, was a folded stack of legal documents. Joshua opened them, his eyes scanning the text. It wasn't estate management. It was a power of attorney transfer and a pre-approved deed sale for the house. Vanessa had already listed the property online and was planning to sell his childhood home, pocket the cash, and dump his mother into a cheap state facility while he was thousands of miles away at sea.
