As the dust settled, Chloe dragged herself out of the damaged drywall, coughing and clutching her bruised side. "Let's have them look at the security cameras I installed before I deployed. Let's see what they think of you abusing an elderly woman in her own home."

David walked over to the dining table and picked up the small ceramic bowl his mother had been holding. Inside were not stolen valuables, but old, hand-written recipes and family photographs—the only keepsakes Helen had left of her late husband.

Helen, still trembling in her green cardigan, finally found her voice.

"David, she... she tried to make me sign papers. She said you agreed to put me in an asylum. She wanted to sell my house."

David’s heart shattered. He had sent Chloe thousands of dollars every month while deployed to ensure his mother’s comfort and medical care. Instead, Chloe had intercepted the funds, isolated Helen, and attempted to legally declare her mentally incompetent to seize the deed to the property.
