Vanessa groaned loudly as she pulled herself up from the plaster debris, her dark red dress covered in white drywall dust. Her eyes flared with a mixture of shock and sheer malice as she stared at her husband. She had never seen David this angry, but her greed quickly overrode her fear.

"Are you insane?" Vanessa shrieked, rubbing her bruised shoulder. "You assaulted me! I am your wife, David! I will call the police and have you locked up for the rest of your life!"

Vanessa had demanded that Margaret sign over the deed of the house to her, threatening to throw her into a neglected, state-run nursing facility if she refused. The ceramic bowl Margaret had been clutching so desperately did not contain stolen money; it held Margaret’s late husband’s military medals and her wedding ring—the only keepsakes she had left. Vanessa had tried to tear them from her hands to pawn them.
