A Soldier Returns From War and Finds His Son Freezing in the Backyard
Previously: When soldier Blake returned home to surprise his son, he never expected to find him freezing in the snow while his mother sat warmly inside.
The Warmth of Deception
Blake didn't knock. He slid the glass door open with a sharp, violent motion that made the frame rattle. The laughter in the living room died instantly. Chloe gasped, dropping her wine glass onto the thick rug, while Julian sprang to his feet, his face twisting from shock to immediate defensiveness. Before either of them could speak, Blake stepped into the heated room, wrapping his heavy military jacket around Wyatt's shivering frame.
"Blake? What are you doing here? You're not supposed to be back until next week!" Chloe stammered, her eyes darting between her ex-husband and her trembling son.
"Is this a joke to you?" Blake’s voice was dangerously low, a calm before the storm. "My son was freezing to death in the backyard! His head was stuck in a chair! How long was he out there while you two sat here drinking?"
Julian smoothed his expensive cashmere sweater, trying to regain his composure. He stepped forward, his tone dripping with condescension. "Look, Sergeant, let’s not blow things out of proportion. Wyatt was just throwing a tantrum. He spilled juice on the new carpet, and I told him he needed a timeout to cool off. He must have slipped out the back. It was only for a few minutes."
But Wyatt's violent shivering and the red marks on his neck told a completely different story. Blake looked at Chloe, hoping to see maternal outrage, but she merely looked away, refusing to meet his eyes. It became sickeningly clear to Blake: Chloe had allowed her new husband's cruel 'discipline' to become the norm in exchange for the luxurious lifestyle Julian provided. Julian stepped closer, pointing a finger at Blake's chest. "You have no authority here. This is my house, and that is my stepson. I suggest you put him down and leave before I call the police for trespassing."
