Previously: When Sergeant Mitchell returned home early from deployment, he never expected to catch his grandmother's trusted caregiver committing an act of unspeakable cruelty. The truth behind the abuse shook him to his core.

A Dark Family Conspiracy

With Chelsea temporarily subdued and sobbing in terror on the gravel, Mitchell immediately knelt beside his grandmother. He carefully lifted Edith's fragile head, his rough hands trembling with a mixture of anger and deep concern. The light beige lace of her dress was stained with dirt and a smear of blood from her scraped elbow.

"I’ve got you, Nana. You’re safe now," Mitchell whispered, his voice cracking. "I’m so sorry I wasn't here sooner."

Edith clung to his camouflage sleeve, her chest heaving with weak, shallow breaths. She was trembling violently, but her eyes held a desperate urgency that went beyond physical pain. Instead of crying about her injuries, she pointed a shaking finger toward the spilled contents of her handbag on the grass.

Meanwhile, Chelsea scrambled to her feet, trying to brush the dust off her charcoal grey dress. Her initial terror was quickly morphing into defensive anger. She adjusted her hair, her eyes dating toward the estate's security gates.

"You can't touch me! I was trying to help her!" Chelsea lied, her voice screeching. "She was slipping out of her chair, and I was trying to catch her! You assaulted me, you psycho!"

Mitchell stood up, his towering frame casting a shadow over the defensive caregiver. He pulled out his phone and dialed the police, keeping his eyes locked on her. "Try running," he warned coldly. "See how far you get."

As they waited for the authorities, Edith beckoned Mitchell close. She pulled a small, crumpled envelope from her pocket, pressing it into his hand. Her voice was barely a whisper, but the words struck Mitchell like a physical blow.

"It wasn't an accident, Mitchell," Edith sobbed, tears streaming down her wrinkled cheeks. "Chelsea wasn't trying to help me. She was trying to steal my medication and force me to sign the estate papers. And she isn't working alone. Your uncle Richard hired her."
