Derek didn't bother knocking gently. He slammed his fist against the sliding glass door, the heavy glass rattling under his strength. Inside, Sarah and Julian jumped, their laughter instantly dying. When Sarah saw Derek standing in the snow, holding a shivering Owen, her face drained of color. Julian frowned, reluctantly sliding the door open, letting a blast of warm air escape into the freezing night.

"What are you doing here, Derek? And why is Owen outside?"

Sarah stammered, reaching out to take the boy, but Derek stepped back, shielding Owen from her grasp.

"He was freezing, Sarah! His head was stuck in a chair!"

Derek roared, his voice laced with pure fury.

"He was in green pajamas in sub-zero temperatures while you two were sitting here drinking wine!"

Julian crossed his arms, stepping forward with an arrogant sneer.

"It was just a quick timeout,"

Julian said dismissively.

"He ruined our imported rug. He needs to learn discipline. We only put him out there five minutes ago."

But the frostbite on Owen’s fingertips told a completely different story. The boy had been out there for much longer. Derek realized with a sickening clarity that this wasn't the first time. Since Derek had been deployed, Sarah and her new husband had treated Owen like an unwanted burden, keeping him isolated while pretending to be the perfect family to the outside world.

"You have no right to interfere,"

Sarah hissed, her guilt turning into venom.

"You signed away your primary custody when you went overseas. If you try to take him, we will call the police for kidnapping."

Derek looked down at his son, who was still trembling in his arms, and then back at the heartless couple. He realized he would have to fight a dirty battle to save his son from this living nightmare.
