A Sudden Threat in the Snow

The pink sunset painted the snowy suburban yard in soft, deceptive hues of rose and gold. From the warmth of her white timber porch, Sarah clutched her mug of tea, a rare moment of peace washing over her. Down in the driveway, her eight-year-old daughter, Lily, was laughing as she shoveled the fresh snow, her bright red winter coat standing out vividly against the white landscape. It was a picture-perfect winter evening, the kind Sarah had prayed for after years of hardship.

Then, the silence of the neighborhood was broken by the low rumble of an engine. A dark green, heavily tinted SUV-style truck crept slowly down the street, its headlights off despite the fading light. Sarah felt a sudden, inexplicable chill run down her spine as the vehicle slowed to a crawl right in front of their driveway. Before she could call out to Lily, the snow-dusted bushes rustled violently.

Out of the shadows burst a man in a dusty, woodland camo uniform. His crew-cut hair was damp with melted snow, and his face was etched with sheer desperation. Without warning, he sprinted across the yard and tackled Lily to the frozen ground, throwing his heavy body over hers to shield her from the street.

Sarah screamed, dropping her mug as it shattered on the wooden deck. She lunged toward the stairs, but her legs felt like lead. Down in the snow, the soldier cradled a terrified Lily close to his chest. The camera of Sarah's mind locked onto his scraped, anxious face as he whispered breathlessly into the little girl's ear.

"It's okay. It's okay. You okay?"

He looked up warily toward the street where the green SUV had suddenly accelerated and sped away. Looking back down at the trembling child, he muttered under his breath:

"I got you. Stay low."
