Previously: When a rugged soldier suddenly tackled young Lily into the snow, Sarah screamed in terror. But when she looked closer at the stranger's face, her world stood completely still.

The Face of a Ghost

Adrenaline surged through Sarah's veins, breaking her temporary paralysis. She scrambled down the slippery wooden steps, her boots sinking deep into the fresh snow. "Get away from her!" she shrieked, her voice cracking in the freezing air. "Get off my daughter!"

As she reached the driveway, she prepared to fight the intruder with everything she had. But as she drew closer, the soldier slowly rolled off Lily, keeping his body low to the ground. He looked up at Sarah, his eyes wide, bloodshot, and filled with a harrowing mixture of fear and recognition. The sunset light caught the contours of his face, and Sarah stopped dead in her tracks, the breath completely knocked out of her.

"Sarah?" the man whispered, his lips trembling. "Is... is that you?"

Sarah gasped, clutching her chest. The rugged, scruffy face, the piercing blue eyes, the familiar scar across his left brow—it was impossible. This was Mark, her husband. The man who had been deployed to a hostile combat zone two years ago. The man whose helicopter had gone down over enemy territory. The man the military had declared missing in action, and eventually, presumed dead.

"Mark?" Sarah sobbed, falling to her knees in the cold snow. "Oh my God, Mark? You're alive?"

But Mark was not entirely there. The loud backfire of the old green truck had triggered a severe, overwhelming PTSD flashback, dragging him right back to the dusty, dangerous streets of his deployment. He was still trembling, clutching Lily’s hand tightly, convinced they were in the middle of an active ambush. Lily was crying, confused by the strange man who had tackled her, yet sensing a strange, deep familiarity in his frantic embrace.
