A Nightmare in the Kitchen

It was supposed to be an ordinary Tuesday afternoon when Robert pulled his truck into the gravel driveway of his childhood home. He had spent the morning running errands and picking up fresh groceries for his elderly mother, Evelyn. Evelyn, a sweet-tempered woman in her late seventies, had been struggling with early-stage dementia, and Robert had recently hired his wife, Ashley, to be her full-time caregiver. He believed it was the perfect arrangement—who better to care for his beloved mother than the woman he loved?

But as Robert stepped onto the porch, carrying heavy paper grocery bags, an unsettling feeling washed over him. The house was unusually quiet, save for a muffled, distressing sound coming from the kitchen. Frowning, Robert pushed the front door open and stepped inside, his boots quiet on the hardwood floor.

As he neared the rustic, pine-paneled kitchen, the sounds became terrifyingly clear. It was his mother, whimpering in pain. Robert froze in the doorway, his heart hammering against his ribs. The scene before him was like something out of a horror movie.

Evelyn, wearing her silver glasses and a faded grey cardigan, was slumped in her wooden chair at the kitchen table. Tears streamed down her wrinkled cheeks. Standing over her was Ashley, dressed in a black sweater, her face twisted in a sneer of pure malice. Ashley was aggressively forcing a spoonful of hot, mushy food into Evelyn’s mouth, ignoring the elderly woman’s desperate attempts to turn her head away.

"You old hag, eat this!" Ashley hissed, her voice dripping with venom.

Evelyn sobbed, choking on the food.

"Stop, please, stop!" she whimpered.

The shock paralyzed Robert for a split second. The paper grocery bags slipped from his hands, crashing to the floor. Cans rolled across the linoleum, and oranges scattered in every direction. At the sound, Ashley snapped her head around, her eyes widening in sudden panic. But Robert was already moving. A blind, protective rage took over. He charged forward, his voice a roaring thunder.

"Get away from her!" Robert shouted.

He grabbed Ashley by the shoulders of her black sweater and violently pulled her back, throwing her away from his crying mother. Ashley screamed in protest,

"No, get off of me!"
but Robert’s grip was iron. He shoved her backward, pinning her briefly against the stainless steel refrigerator before kicking a stray chair between them to keep her away.
