A Heavy Delivery in the Rain

The autumn rain fell in relentless sheets, drumming against the ancient stone wall gate that separated Ruth’s quiet cottage from the rest of the world. At seventy-two, Ruth’s hands trembled with age, but they shook even harder from the cold dread pooling in her chest as she looked at her son, Mark. He stood before her in his drenched brown canvas jacket, his eyes hollow and bloodshot. Without a word of greeting, he thrust a heavy, wet burlap sack into her fragile arms.

"Take the rice and go, mom,"

Mark’s voice was strained, barely audible over the howling wind. Before Ruth could even ask what was happening, her son turned on his heel and walked away into the downpour. His shoulders were hunched, his head bowed against the storm. Tears mingled with the rain on Ruth's wrinkled cheeks as she struggled to drag the heavy sack inside, shutting the heavy oak door behind her.

In the dim warmth of her dining room, she placed the dripping sack onto her polished mahogany table. With shaking fingers, she untied the rough twine. Inside, buried beneath a thin layer of dry rice, was a thick stack of hundred-dollar bills wrapped in plastic, alongside a sealed envelope labeled simply: "Mom."

As she tore the envelope open, she felt a sudden chill. She looked toward the window. There, standing in the dark garden under the torrential rain, was Mark. He was weeping silently, his face pressed near the glass, though he made no move to come inside. Through the glass, his silent, sorrowful apology seemed to echo in her mind: "I'm sorry, mom. I couldn't say it in front of her." Ruth clutched the note to her chest, her heart shattering into a thousand pieces.
