The note explained everything, and it painted a picture of a nightmare Martha had long suspected but never fully understood. Leo's wife, Chloe, had taken complete control of their lives. She was a woman driven by greed and a deep-seated resentment toward Martha. Chloe had slowly cut Martha off from any financial support, monitoring Leo's accounts with a hawk-like intensity. But it was worse than that. Leo's note revealed that Chloe was actively planning to force Martha out of her beloved cottage, intending to sell the land and put Martha into a cheap, neglectful state-run care facility.

Leo had spent months secretly liquidating his personal pre-marital savings, hiding the cash from Chloe’s watchful eyes. The "rice" was his final, desperate act to secure his mother's safety before Chloe could strip them of everything. But just as Martha finished reading the heartbreaking letter, a loud, aggressive knock shattered the silence of the cottage.

Martha’s heart plummeted. She scrambled to hide the money back in the sack, but before she could, the door burst open. It was Chloe. "I knew it," Chloe sneered, stepping into the dim dining room. "I knew he was sneaking around behind my back. What did he bring you, old woman? What is in that sack?"

Martha stood firmly in front of the table, shielding the burlap bag with her fragile body. She could feel her heart hammering against her ribs. Chloe stepped closer, her heels clicking sharply on the wooden floor. She reached out to shove Martha aside, determined to claim whatever Leo had hidden.
