Chloe stood shivering, water dripping from her auburn locks onto the ruined fabric of her dress. Her eyes blazed with fury as she glared at her brother. "Are you insane, Ethan?!" she shrieked, her voice cracking. "Look what you did to me! Mommy, tell him he’s kicked out of the house! Do something!"

Martha, still on her knees, scrambled to grab a towel, her maternal instincts kicking in despite the humiliation she had just endured. "Oh, sweetie, let me dry you off," she whimpered, reaching out. But Ethan stepped forward, gently but firmly catching his mother's arm and helping her stand up.

"No, Mom. Stop," Ethan said, his voice steady but filled with emotion. "Do not touch her. She is a grown woman, and she just treated you like a slave. I am not going to stand by and watch you destroy your dignity for someone who doesn't respect you."

Chloe scoffed, crossing her arms. "She’s my mother! She wants to take care of me! You have no right to interfere in our family!"

"We are a family, Chloe, and that means we protect each other. But you only take," Ethan countered. He turned to his mother, his eyes softening. "Mom, why do you let her do this to you? It’s killing you. You’re working two jobs, and you come home to wash her feet? Why?"

Martha collapsed onto the sofa, burying her face in her hands. The dam finally broke, and tears poured down her cheeks. "It’s my fault, Ethan," she sobbed, her voice barely a whisper. "I have to make it up to her. I’ve been carrying this guilt for twenty years."

Ethan and Chloe both froze. Martha looked up, her eyes red and hollow. "Before you were born, Ethan, I had another baby girl. Chloe's twin sister. We were so poor, starving... I couldn't keep her. I gave her up for adoption. I promised myself I would never let Chloe suffer or feel unloved. I ruined her by trying to pay a debt she didn't even know existed."
