The mahogany-paneled walls of the courtroom felt like a gilded cage, trapping everyone inside in a suffocating silence. Clara, a gentle nineteen-year-old who had worked as a maid for the prestigious Vance family, sat at the defense table. Her eyes were red, and tears streamed down her face, leaving dark tracks on her cheeks. She wore her simple black-and-white uniform, a stark contrast to the expensive designer suits filling the room. In the spectator gallery, Leo Vance sat on the hard wooden bench, his knuckles white as he gripped his knees. He was only nineteen, but the weight of the world rested on his shoulders. He knew the truth. He knew Clara was innocent, and he knew she was taking the fall for a crime she didn't commit. The guilt inside him burned like fire.
