The Doctor's Dark Secret

David rushed over, his leather shoes tearing into the perfect grass. Without hesitation, he kicked the white basin, sending the warm water splashing across the lawn. His face was flushed with anger as he pointed a trembling finger at Toby.

"Get away from her!" David roared, his voice shaking with authority. "You are an amateur, Toby! You are interfering with a delicate neurological treatment. You could cause permanent damage to her spine!"

But Toby did not flinch. He stood up slowly, putting himself directly between the furious doctor and Lily’s wheelchair. From his pocket, he pulled a small, sealed plastic bag containing a familiar jar of prescription cream.

"I'm not the one causing damage, David," Toby said, his voice deadly calm. "I took a sample of Lily’s nightly leg cream to the university pharmacology lab. I had it analyzed."

David’s eyes widened slightly, a momentary flicker of fear crossing his sharp features before he masked it with a sneer. Lily looked between her stepfather and her boyfriend, her heart hammering violently in her chest.

"What are you talking about?" Lily whispered, her voice cracking. "Toby, what did they find?"

"It’s not a healing lotion, Lily," Toby explained, keeping his eyes locked on David. "It’s a highly concentrated compound containing a rare botanical neurotoxin. When applied daily, it blocks the motor nerves in your lower extremities, mimicking permanent paralysis. He wasn't helping you heal. He was actively keeping you paralyzed."

A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the lawn. Lily stared at her stepfather, waiting for him to laugh, to deny it with his usual medical confidence. But David’s face had drained of all color. He looked trapped, his hands trembling at his sides.

"This is absurd!" David stammered, taking a step toward Lily's chair. "You’re a college kid trying to play doctor. Lily, don't listen to his lies. We need to go inside right now."

When David reached out to grab her wheelchair, Toby stepped in, blocking him physically. Cornered, David's professional facade crumbled entirely. He let out a harsh, bitter laugh.

"You think you can just walk away with her?" David hissed, his eyes gleaming with malice. "You don't know anything! If she walks, everything her mother left behind is gone!"
