My Stepfather Tackled Our Family Lawyer to Hide My Late Mother's Darkest Secret
Previously: When Steve tackled our elderly family lawyer on the front lawn, I thought it was just about the house. But the document Lawrence held contained a secret that changed everything.
The Secret in the Floorboards
Two of our neighbors, alerted by Jessica's frantic screams, rushed across the lawn and managed to pull Steve away from me. Steve spat on the ground, pointing a trembling, angry finger at us. "This isn't over!" he roared, his voice echoing off the suburban houses. "You don't know what's inside this house. You don't know what she did!" He kicked a cardboard box aside, stormed to his truck, and sped away, tires screeching.
I fell to my knees, rubbing my bruised neck as Jessica helped Lawrence to his feet. The elderly lawyer was trembling, his charcoal suit covered in grass stains, but he still clutched the paper document like a lifeline. He coughed, looking at me with genuine fear in his eyes.

"I'm fine, Toby," Lawrence whispered hoarsely. "But we don't have much time. Read the back of the deed."
I unfolded the document. Attached to the official deed was a handwritten note from my late mother. My eyes scanned her familiar, elegant cursive: "Toby, Jessica. If you are reading this, Steve knows the truth. Do not let him near the master bedroom. Under the loose floorboard beneath the wardrobe, there is a safe. What is inside will either save you, or destroy us all."
Panic surged through us. Leaving Lawrence on the porch to call the police, Jessica and I ran inside and dashed up the stairs. We shoved the heavy oak wardrobe aside, scraping the floorboards. Sure enough, there was a loose plank. I pried it open with a pocket knife, revealing a heavy, dusty metal safe. But we didn't have the combination.
Just as I began to panic, a strong, chemical odor drifted up the stairs. It was the unmistakable, terrifying smell of gasoline. Suddenly, the smoke detector downstairs began to wail. Steve had come back through the back door, and he had brought a gas can.
