My Stepfather Tackled Our Family Lawyer to Hide My Late Mother's Darkest Secret
Previously: When Steve tackled our elderly family lawyer on the front lawn, I thought it was just about the house. But the document Lawrence held contained a secret that changed everything.
The Final Reckoning
The shrill beep of the smoke alarm pierced the air as the smell of gasoline grew overwhelming. "Jessica, call nine-one-one!" I yelled, sprinting down the stairs. When I reached the living room, I saw Steve standing near the front entryway, holding a plastic red gas can. He was pouring a line of fuel across the wooden floorboards, a silver lighter clutched in his trembling hand.
"I told you I'd burn this place to the ground before I let you have it!" Steve screamed, his eyes wild with desperate madness.
He raised the lighter, ready to flick the flame. I didn't think. I just threw my entire body weight forward, tackling Steve to the floor. The gas can spilled, splashing fuel across us as we wrestled on the damp floor. Steve swung a wild punch, grazing my cheek, but the adrenaline made me numb to the pain. I pinned his wrists to the ground, screaming for Jessica to stay back.

Outside, the distant wail of sirens grew louder, rapidly approaching. Within moments, flashing red and blue lights illuminated the living room windows. Three police officers burst through the front door with guns drawn, forcing Steve to the ground and handcuffing him. He was dragged away, screaming curses into the night.
Once the fire department cleared the house, Lawrence came inside with a locksmith. Within minutes, the heavy safe upstairs was clicked open. Inside lay a second deed—the original deed to the house, proving Steve had forged my mother's signature on a transfer document weeks prior. But there was also a life insurance policy made out solely to Jessica and me, and a final letter from our mother expressing her profound love and her hope that we would finally be free of Steve's shadow.
Sitting on the porch as the sun began to rise, Jessica and I held each other tightly. The nightmare was finally over, and we had successfully protected our mother's legacy from the man who tried to destroy it.
