My Stepmother Claimed Dad Died of a Disease, but the Closed Casket Was Breathing
The Sealed Mahogany Casket
The heavy air in the living room smelled of ozone, melting wax, and stale lilies. It was a classic, dimly lit American home, but tonight, it felt like a tomb. Flickering candles cast long, dancing shadows across the mahogany casket resting in the center of the room. Maria stood beside it, her auburn hair pinned back in a severe, flawless bun. She wore a long-sleeved black lace dress that seemed to absorb what little light remained. Her expression was a mask of cold, calculated grief.
Suddenly, the heavy wooden front doors burst open. Leo stumbled into the room, his blonde hair disheveled, his dark charcoal suit wrinkled from his frantic drive.
"Dad! Dad!"he cried out, his voice cracking with pure agony. He collapsed onto the heavy lid of the casket, hot tears spilling onto the polished wood.
"When did all this happen, Maria? I was only gone for two days! I want to see my father one last time."
Maria’s eyes widened in sudden panic. She lunged forward, her fingers gripping Leo’s shoulders with surprising, desperate strength. She leaned in, her voice a frantic, hushed whisper.
"No, you can't! It can't be opened. Your father had a disease, Leo. A very contagious, rapid disease. The doctors sealed him immediately for our safety."
Leo stared at her, his heart hammering against his ribs. Something in her eyes didn't look like grief; it looked like terror. What Leo didn't know was what was happening just inches beneath his hands. Inside the dark, suffocating confines of the casket, Arthur was wide awake. Thick duct tape was bound tightly over his mouth, and his wrists were secured with heavy zip-ties. He could hear his son's muffled weeping through the wood, his own eyes wide with sheer terror as he frantically tried to move, praying for a miracle.
