My Stepmother Said Dad Died Of A Contagious Illness But The Casket Was Moving
Previously: When Leo rushed to his father's sudden wake, his stepmother Maria refused to let him open the casket. She claimed a deadly virus sealed it—but a faint tapping from inside changed everything.
A Voice in the Dark
Leo stepped back, his mind racing. Something about Maria's explanation felt entirely wrong. His father, Thomas, was a retired structural engineer who rarely left the house and had been in perfect health just two days ago. How could he have contracted a highly contagious, fatal virus overnight? More importantly, why hadn't the hospital contacted Leo directly?
“Maria, this doesn't make sense,” Leo said, his voice dropping to a suspicious whisper. “What hospital did he die in? Who was his attending physician? I need to see the death certificate.”
Maria’s face hardened, the mask of the grieving widow slipping for a fraction of a second.
“Do you think I’m lying to you, Leo? In this moment of tragedy?” she snapped, her voice dripping with artificial offense. “The medical examiners took him straight from the house. They are bringing the burial permit directly to the cemetery. The hearse will be here in twenty minutes. Please, just let me mourn in peace.”
She turned her back to him, pretending to adjust a vase of white lilies, but Leo noticed her hands were shaking violently. Suddenly, her phone buzzed in her purse. She quickly snatched it, whispering a hurried, “I have to take this, it’s the funeral director,” before stepping out into the hallway.
Left alone in the silent room, Leo approached the casket once more. He placed his hand on the cold wood, his heart hammering against his ribs. He closed his eyes, whispering, “I’m so sorry, Dad.”
And then, he froze.
From deep within the mahogany box came a faint, rhythmic sound. Thump. Thump. Thump. It wasn't the settling of wood. It was a deliberate, desperate knocking. Leo’s breath hitched. He pressed his ear directly against the polished lid. Beneath the heavy wood, he heard a muffled, frantic scratching. His father wasn't dead. He was trapped inside.
