The afternoon sun filtered through the hanging ivy and potted ferns of the spacious kitchen, casting warm, golden patches on the marble countertop. It was a picture-perfect suburban home, yet the atmosphere inside was freezing. Eight-year-old Leo, clutching the hem of his oversized grey sweater, stood at the kitchen entrance. His curly brown hair was slightly messy, and his wide, hopeful eyes were fixed on the woman standing by the stove.

"Mrs. Lorna, is there food for me too?" Leo asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

Lorna, wearing a faded denim apron over her blouse, was busy plating a steaming mountain of pasta. Without looking back, she let out a sharp, irritated sigh. She spun around, her face hardened with disdain, and pointed a wooden spoon at the young boy.

"Don't call me just to ask for food," Lorna snapped, her voice cutting through the quiet kitchen. "I cook for my children, not for strangers. If you're hungry, wait until your father gets home. You are not my responsibility."

Leo’s shoulders slumped. He looked down at his worn-out sneakers, his eyes welling with tears. He had lived in this house for two years, ever since his father, David, married Lorna. Yet, to Lorna, he was nothing more than an unwelcome ghost, a "stranger" who didn't deserve a seat at her table. Her own three children sat in the dining room, laughing and waiting for their lunch, completely oblivious to the cruelty.

But Lorna’s triumphant coldness was short-lived. The heavy front door clicked open, and the firm, echoing footsteps of a man in a hurry filled the hallway. David, a clean-shaven man dressed in a sharp charcoal suit, stepped into the kitchen. His face was pale, his jaw clenched in a tight line of pure, suppressed rage. He looked at his trembling son, then turned his piercing gaze toward his wife.

"Then your children shouldn't be eating either," David said, his voice deadly calm, "because I just found out that none of them are mine."

Lorna froze. The wooden spoon slipped from her hand, clattering loudly against the tiled floor. Her eyes stretched wide with absolute shock, the color instantly draining from her face.
