The courtroom erupted into a frenzy of whispers. Judge Beatrice banged her gavel repeatedly, demanding order. "Quiet in the court!" she boomed. She looked at the bailiff, then back to Sophie. "Bring that device to the bench." As the bailiff retrieved the blue recorder, Eleanor tried to protest, her voice shaking. "Your Honor, this is highly irregular! This evidence hasn't been vetted!" but the judge raised a hand to silence her.

A technician quickly connected the small device to the courtroom’s audio system. A heavy, breathless silence fell over the room. Then, a static hiss filled the air, followed by the weak but unmistakable voice of Arthur, Sophie's late father.

"Eleanor... why are you doing this to me? My heart... what did you put in my pills?"

A collective gasp rippled through the gallery. Eleanor gripped the edge of her table, her knuckles turning white. On the recording, Eleanor’s cold, mocking laughter echoed through the speakers.

"You should have signed the new will, Arthur. Now, your precious Maria will take the blame. Everyone knows she handles your daily medication. It’s foolproof."

The recording didn't end there. Another voice cut in—a male voice, urgent and scheming. "Make sure you wipe the bottle, Eleanor. We need to get out of here before the maid arrives." It was Charles. The very lawyer sitting next to Eleanor, defending her, was the co-conspirator. The courtroom gasped in unison as Charles slumped back in his chair, realizing his career and his freedom were gone in an instant.

Sophie stood tall, tears of vindication washing over her face as she looked at the terrified woman who had tried to steal her family's legacy. The trap had slammed shut, and there was no escape.
