Vanessa fumbled with her collar, her confident facade crumbling under the sheriff's watchful gaze.

"My father told me this house was mine,"

she stammered, her voice losing its edge.

"He said Grandfather Arthur left it to us in his private will. I have a letter upstairs!"

"A letter isn't a deed, Vanessa,"

Clara said coldly.

"And you know as well as I do that Grandfather's official will was filed with the state probate court three years ago. You were excluded."

Vanessa rushed inside and emerged minutes later clutching a yellowed, handwritten piece of paper. She thrust it toward the deputy.

"See? It's signed by Arthur! He wanted us to have this sanctuary."

The deputy glanced at the paper, then handed it to Clara, who didn't even need to read it. She knew exactly what it was.

"This note was written in 2018, Vanessa,"

Clara explained, her tone softening with a mix of pity and anger.

"Grandfather was already in the advanced stages of dementia. He didn't even know his own name some days, let alone what he was signing. But more importantly, your father knew this note was legally worthless."

"You're lying!"

Vanessa cried, tears of frustration welling in her eyes.

"My dad wouldn't lie to me! We put our entire life savings into moving up here!"

"Your father didn't just lie to you, Vanessa. He betrayed you,"

Clara revealed, pulling a secondary set of financial documents from her clipboard.

"Seven years ago, your father ran up massive gambling debts. To prevent going to prison, he begged Grandfather to bail him out. In exchange, your father signed away any and all future claims to this estate. He sold his birthright, and he never told you."
