Previously: When Sarah's classic car broke down at a rural station, mechanic Caleb didn't expect to find a hidden compartment in the dashboard—or a letter that would rewrite his family's history.

Secrets in the Dashboard

Caleb’s heart hammered against his ribs as he stared at the custom weld. He looked up at Sarah, trying to keep his voice casual. "Beautiful car," he remarked, his fingers tracing the metal. "Where did you get it?" Sarah sighed, her shoulders relaxing slightly. She explained she had bought it at an estate auction three states over, hoping to give Toby a memorable road trip. It had belonged to an elderly man who had passed away alone.

Caleb knew that man was his father, Arthur. Arthur had walked out on the family when Caleb was just a teenager, taking this very car with him. For years, Caleb had harbored deep resentment, believing his father had simply abandoned him for a new life. Now, the car had miraculously found its way back to his garage.

Unable to contain his curiosity, Caleb asked if he could check the interior wiring under the dashboard to ensure the cooling fan was functioning. Sarah nodded, taking Toby to the station's small diner for a cold soda. Left alone with the ghost of his past, Caleb crawled into the driver's footwell. He reached behind the glove compartment, feeling for a hidden latch he and his father had built into the frame when he was a boy.

With a soft click, a small metal panel popped open. Inside lay a dusty, yellowed envelope. Caleb’s hands shook as he pulled it out. Written on the front in his father's unmistakable, blocky handwriting was a single name: Caleb. He tore it open, his eyes scanning the faded ink as tears began to blur his vision.
