Previously: At her son's solemn funeral, grieving Evelyn is approached by a dusty, bruised young boy who claims her late son promised she would take him in. Who is he really?

A Voice From the Past

The silence stretched between them, thick and suffocating. Evelyn’s mind raced through a thousand terrifying possibilities. Was this a cruel prank? A scam? Or did her late son have a life she knew absolutely nothing about? She reached out, her manicured hand hovering near the boy’s shoulder but not quite touching him. "Young man, this is a very solemn day. If this is some kind of joke, it is highly inappropriate."

Instead of running, Billy reached into the deep pocket of his ripped hoodie. With trembling fingers, he pulled out a crumpled, stained piece of paper and a small, faded photograph. He held them out like a shield. Evelyn hesitantly took the items. She looked at the photograph first, and her heart stopped. It was a picture of her son, Thomas, looking younger and happier, holding a tiny baby wrapped in a blue blanket. In the background was the very kitchen of the home Thomas had abandoned years ago.

With shaking hands, Evelyn unfolded the letter. The handwriting was unmistakable—it was Thomas’s messy, hurried scrawl. She began to read, her eyes tearing up as her son's voice echoed in her mind from beyond the grave.

"Mom, if you are reading this, it means I didn't make it. I know we haven't spoken, and I know I hurt you by running away. But I need you to do one last thing for me. This is Billy. He is my biological son—your grandson. His mother left us years ago, and I was too proud and ashamed to come back to you. I wanted to clean up my life first. Please, Mom. Don't let him go to the system. He has your eyes. Love him for me."

Evelyn gasped, dropping the letter. She stared at the boy—at Billy. She looked past the dirt on his face and saw the unmistakable shape of Thomas’s nose, and indeed, eyes that mirrored her own. The shock was paralyzing. Her son had a child, a boy he had raised in secret while living in poverty, all because of pride and fear of her judgment.
