An Unexpected Guest

The funeral chapel was bathed in a soft, solemn light that filtered through the stained-glass windows, casting long shadows across the polished wooden pews. Margaret stood motionless beside the light blue casket, her hands clasped tightly in front of her dark charcoal suit. She was grieving Arthur, her husband of forty years, a quiet man who had kept his thoughts as tidy as his garden. The chapel was mostly empty, save for a few distant relatives who had already offered their whispered condolences and slipped away into the gray afternoon.

As Margaret stared down at Arthur’s peaceful face, a soft rustle broke the silence. She turned, expecting the funeral director, but instead found a young boy standing just a few feet away. He couldn’t have been more than eight years old. His face was smudged with dirt, and he wore an oversized, torn gray hoodie that hung loosely off his small frame. His sneakers were worn through at the toes, and his eyes, wide and anxious, stared up at her with a desperate intensity.

Margaret blinked in confusion, waiting for a parent to emerge from the foyer, but no one came. Before she could speak, the boy took a step closer to the casket, his chin trembling.

"He said if he died, you would take me," the boy whispered, his voice cracking.

Margaret felt the air leave her lungs. She stared at the child, her mind racing through a maze of impossible explanations. She leaned down slightly, trying to bridge the distance between them, her voice barely a whisper.

"Take care of you?" she asked, her heart hammering against her ribs. She looked him over once more, noting his disheveled appearance and the raw fear in his eyes. "Who are you?"
