Previously: At her husband's somber funeral, Eleanor is approached by a bruised, disheveled teenager who claims her late husband promised she would take him in. A hidden secret is about to change everything.

A Voice From the Past

The boy flinched slightly at her sharp tone, but he didn't run. Instead, his trembling hand reached deep into the pocket of his frayed grey hoodie. Eleanor watched, her breath hitched, half-expecting him to pull out a weapon or some cheap threat. Instead, he produced a small, crumpled envelope, its white edges worn soft and yellowed from being folded and unfolded countless times.

"My name is Toby,"

he whispered, holding the envelope out to her. "Arthur told me to give you this if he ever stopped coming to visit."

Eleanor’s hand shook as she took the paper. Inside was a handwritten letter in Arthur’s distinctive, elegant cursive, alongside a faded photograph. Eleanor gasped, clutching her chest as her knees threatened to buckle. The photograph showed a younger Arthur standing next to their estranged son, Julian, who had tragically passed away in a motorcycle accident ten years prior. But in Julian's arms was a tiny baby. A baby with the exact same striking blue eyes as the boy standing before her.

With tears blurring her vision, Eleanor scanned the letter. Arthur’s words confessed a secret he had kept for over a decade. After Julian's death, Arthur had discovered the existence of his grandson, Toby. Fearing Eleanor’s fragile mental state at the time, and honoring Julian’s dying wish to keep the boy away from their high-society drama, Arthur had secretly funded Toby's life, placing him in a trusted foster home and visiting him weekly. But the foster father had recently passed, and Arthur was preparing to bring Toby home permanently—right before his sudden, fatal heart attack.

"He promised me I had a grandmother who would love me,"

Toby sobbed, looking down at his worn sneakers. "But if you don't want me, I understand. I can go."
