Previously: When a disheveled little boy approached Eleanor at her husband's funeral and claimed he was sent to live with her, a devastating family secret began to unravel.

The Secret in the Pocket

The boy didn't answer immediately. Instead, his small, trembling hand reached into the pocket of his frayed hoodie. He pulled out a crumpled envelope and handed it to Eleanor. The paper was worn, and on the front, written in a familiar, steady handwriting, was her name: Eleanor. It was undeniably Richard's handwriting.

With shaking fingers, Eleanor tore open the envelope. Inside was a letter, dated just two weeks before Richard's sudden passing. As she read the words, the world seemed to tilt beneath her feet.

"My dearest Eleanor," the letter began. "If you are reading this, I am gone, and Toby is with you. I have kept a monumental secret from you for eight years, and for that, I am deeply sorry. Toby is my grandson. My daughter, Sarah, whom I had from a brief relationship before we met, passed away from illness last month. I couldn't bear to tell you the truth because of my own shame for abandoning her years ago. I tried to make things right by caring for Toby in secret, but my heart is failing. Please, Eleanor, do not let him suffer for my sins. He has no one else."

Eleanor stared at the letter, tears blurring her vision. Anger, betrayal, and profound grief clashed violently inside her chest. Richard, the man she thought she knew completely, had lived a double life. He had a daughter, and now, a grandson, whom he had hidden away from her out of fear and shame.

She looked down at Toby. The boy was watching her anxiously, biting his lower lip, waiting for her reaction. He looked so small, so incredibly vulnerable standing beside the casket of the only man who had looked out for him.

"Did you know Richard well?" Eleanor asked, her voice cracking as she knelt to be at eye level with him.
"He was my Grandpa Rich," Toby whispered, a tear escaping his eye. "He said you were a good person. He said you would love me."
