Previously: When Richard dropped a photo of his late wife on a lonely brick road, a little girl picked it up. Her shocking claim—and her eyes—would change his life forever.

The Shadow in the Doorway

Before Richard could ask another question, the little girl turned and ran down the alleyway. "Wait! Please, wait!" Richard cried out, his boots pounding against the wet bricks. He chased her through the winding streets until she ran up the steps of a small, dilapidated house with a flickering porch light. She slipped inside, leaving the door slightly ajar.

Richard stood on the porch, his heart racing. He knocked gently, and the door swung open to reveal a woman wrapping a wool shawl around her shoulders. Richard felt his breath leave his body. It was Clara. Her face was slightly pale, her hair longer, but it was undoubtedly her.

"Clara?" Richard whispered, tears streaming down his face.

But instead of throwing her arms around him, Clara stepped back, her eyes wide with fear.

"Who are you? What do you want?" she asked, her voice trembling.

Richard felt a cold dread settle in his stomach. She didn't recognize him. Before he could speak, a tall, stern-looking man stepped out from the shadows behind Clara, placing a heavy, controlling hand on her shoulder.

"Is there a problem here, Clara?" the man asked, his voice dripping with ice. "Who is this stranger?"

Clara shrank back slightly under his touch, her gaze darting to the floor. Richard realized with a sinking heart that his wife was not only suffering from memory loss, but she was also living in absolute terror of this man, who called himself Arthur. Richard knew he couldn't just walk away; he had to find out what Arthur had done to his wife five years ago.
